We design content that is accessible and inclusive from the beginning

Importance of Accessibility

There are many different definitions of disability; but they all lead towards something not being done easily, or at all. Approximately 15% of the world’s population identify as experiencing some form of disability. However, this rarely extends beyond a particular situation or circumstance.

Often, there is a different option available for someone to achieve the same outcome. For example, 10-storey building should have stairs and a lift. Someone who can’t use stairs can still reach the top, and someone who could use the stairs may still choose to take the lift.

Information plays by the same rules. We measure accessibility, literally “the ability to access”, by how many people have the ability to access your content. We haven’t met an organisation yet that is unhappy about people being able to access and engage with their products, services or resources.

Accessibility also provides choice – things are able to be accessed in different ways. Text on a screen can be read out loud, made larger or smaller, or translated to another language amongst various other options. Our multicultural society is made up of people with different backgrounds, who speak different languages, with differing levels of education, and differing preferences. Why not make something they can all use?

“Inclusive communication empowers everyone breaking barriers for a shared understanding.”
