OPTIMISM: Design Week Brisbane IS NOW!

OPTIMISM: Design Week Brisbane IS NOW!

OPTIMISM: Icograda Design Week Brisbane has hit Brisbane this week. Last week was the warm up week with Unlimited: Designing for the Asia Pacific setting the scene for one of the most exciting Design Conferences to come to Brisbane. The international event is unlikely to be back in Australia, let alone Brisbane, for a very long time! AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) has been planning this event over the past two years partnering with ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations). I have been a part of the AGDA Organising Committee contributing to the design, development and ongoing maintenance of the designweekbrisbane.com website. This morning I met the Icograda representatives who gave me feedback that the site is perhaps the best design week website yet! (I’m finding it hard to fit through doors with my inflated ego!)

It is very exciting to be in the same room as so many acclaimed international design presenters who are more than happy to impart their past learnings with us all to broaden the reach of design in our community and educate to others the value of design.

Today the focus is on exactly that, educating the value of design. In particular within business—any business, in any industry. The Queensland Government has introduced a program called Ulysses-Transforming Queensland Business Through Design. The Ulysses program is based on and inspired by a similar program created in New Zealand called Better by Design. The program was so successful over there that Queensland designers brought it to the front of mind of the government and they took notice. Other Australian states have already leaped ahead in terms of their design awareness programs even having dedicated ‘Design’ parliament departments. The Ulysses program takes businesses on board and takes them through a mentoring process. The businesses have access to industry professionals that can help them to think different and identify where they want to be in their industry and how to get there.

Tonight is the welcome reception and then tomorrow and Friday is packed with all of the amazing speakers. I am looking forward to Paul Hughes (Director of Lava – European Design Agency of the Year 2010) and Mimmo Cozzolino (Australian designer) tomorrow.

Have a fantastic OPTIMISM Deign Week everyone!

Yours in design

Paul.
