Los Angeles Design Challenge

Grow your own car?

Mercedes has taken up the garden spade and hoe in its search for a sustainable future for the motorcar, and showcased the next technology at the LA Design Challenge. The futuristic coupe looks very flash, but no mention of how much cash, or when this beauty may become more than a dream.

The Mercedes-Benz BIOME will be grown in a completely organic environment, from seeds sown in a nursery. The car emits pure oxygen, and at the end of its lifespan it can be composted or simply used as building material.

Hubert Lee, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios, explained
“As the inventor of the motor car, we wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future, which is created and functions in complete symbiosis with nature,”

I would like to think this is not just a dream, lets hope we all get to road-test one like it soon.

Yours in Design

Richard
